Honeymoon Island vs Caladesi Island: Which Clearwater Boat Tour Is Right for You?

Two Islands, One Unforgettable Day on the Gulf

If you're researching Clearwater island hopping, you've probably seen two names come up again and again: Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island. Both are stunning barrier islands on Florida's Gulf Coast, both have pristine beaches, and both are best experienced from the water. So which one should you visit on your private boat charter? The short answer: you don't have to choose — with a captained charter from Clearwater Beach, you can hit both in a single afternoon. But each island has its own personality, and depending on whether you're after shelling, swimming, wildlife, or simply a quiet stretch of sand, one might suit your group better than the other.

Here's Captain Mark's breakdown of Honeymoon Island vs. Caladesi Island so you can plan the perfect day.

Honeymoon Island: The Accessible Classic

Honeymoon Island State Park sits just north of Clearwater Beach, a short and scenic boat ride from our departure point at 663 Bay Esplanade. It's the more accessible of the two islands — there's a causeway and ferry service from the mainland — but arriving by private boat gives you a completely different experience.

What Makes Honeymoon Island Special

  • Beaches: Wide, white-sand beaches with gentle surf perfect for swimming. The northern stretch tends to be quieter, especially when you arrive by boat and anchor away from the main public access points.
  • Shelling: Honeymoon is known for excellent shelling, especially after a good tide shift. You'll find scallops, whelks, and olive shells scattered along the shoreline.
  • Nature Trails: If your group wants to stretch their legs, the island has miles of hiking trails through slash pine forests and mangrove swamps.
  • Wildlife: Ospreys, great horned owls, and gopher tortoises call Honeymoon home. From the boat, you'll often spot dolphins cruising the channel between the island and the mainland.

Best For

Honeymoon Island is ideal for families who want a mix of beach time and light exploration. It's also a great choice if you're on a shorter charter — the 2-Hour Sandbar & Swim Charter gives you plenty of time to anchor, swim, and shell before heading back.

Caladesi Island: The Untouched Escape

Caladesi Island sits just south of Honeymoon, separated by a narrow channel called Hurricane Pass. It's one of the few truly undeveloped barrier islands on Florida's Gulf Coast — no condos, no restaurants, no paved roads. You can reach it by the state park ferry from Honeymoon, but the best way to experience Caladesi is by private boat.

What Makes Caladesi Island Special

  • Pristine Beaches: Caladesi routinely ranks among the top beaches in the United States. The sand is powdery white, the water is that trademark Gulf turquoise, and because the island is less accessible, you'll often have long stretches of beach nearly to yourself.
  • Mangrove Tunnel: One of Caladesi's hidden gems is a three-mile kayak trail through a mangrove tunnel. While we don't kayak on our charters, cruising the perimeter of the island gives you a front-row seat to the mangrove ecosystem and the birdlife it supports.
  • Shelling: If Honeymoon is good for shelling, Caladesi is great. The fewer visitors mean less competition for the best finds — horse conchs, lightning whelks, and sand dollars are all common, especially on the Gulf-facing side.
  • Peace and Quiet: This is the island you choose when you want to get away from it all. No crowds, no noise, just the sound of waves and shorebirds.

Best For

Caladesi Island is perfect for couples, small groups, and anyone who wants the feeling of having discovered a hidden paradise. It shines on our 4-Hour Island & Sandbar Adventure, which gives you enough time to anchor at Caladesi, swim, shell, and still explore a sandbar or two on the way back.

Why Not Both? The Island Hopping Charter

Here's the thing most visitors don't realize: Honeymoon and Caladesi are separated by just a few hundred yards of water. On a private charter, you can anchor near Honeymoon, shell and swim for a while, then cruise through Hurricane Pass and drop anchor on the Caladesi side — all in one trip.

This is exactly what makes Clearwater island hopping by private boat so special. You're not locked into one destination. Captain Mark reads the tides, the wind, and the crowd levels, and he'll chart a course that gives your group the best possible experience. On our 6-Hour Custom Island Adventure, you can do a full island-hopping loop — Honeymoon, Caladesi, a sandbar stop, and maybe even a dolphin-spotting run through the intracoastal.

What About Dolphins?

Both islands sit along routes that Clearwater dolphin tours frequent, and sightings are common in the channels and flats around Honeymoon and Caladesi. The dolphins here are wild — they feed, play, and travel on their own schedule — so while we can't guarantee an encounter, the waters around these islands are some of the best dolphin habitat on the Gulf Coast. On a calm morning, you'll often see them surfacing in the shallows between the islands.

Practical Tips for Your Island Charter

Bring a cooler-friendly lunch. We provide a cooler with ice and bottled water, and you're welcome to bring snacks, food, and drinks (adult beverages are fine — just no glass). Caladesi has no food service, so if you're doing a 4- or 6-hour charter, pack accordingly.

Sun protection is non-negotiable. Both islands have very little shade. We recommend reef-safe sunscreen, hats, and rash guards. You can bring your own beach chairs and umbrellas — they're not included, but they're welcome on board.

Check the conditions. Captain Mark makes the final call on weather and safety, and exact destinations depend on conditions. If you want to see what's happening on the Gulf before your trip, you can always check the Clearwater marine forecast.

Book early. Private charters are one boat per group — up to 6 guests, one flat price. That means availability is limited. The best way to secure your date is to request to book your charter as early as possible.

The Verdict

If forced to pick: Honeymoon Island is the all-rounder — great beaches, good shelling, easy access, and plenty of wildlife. Caladesi Island is the escape — fewer people, more untouched, and that once-in-a-lifetime feeling of stepping onto a beach that looks exactly as it did a hundred years ago.

But the real answer is: don't pick. Hop both. That's the beauty of a private captained charter — you get to experience the entire stretch of Gulf Coast barrier islands at your own pace, with a local captain who knows every channel, sandbar, and dolphin hangout along the way.
